SAM AND DAVE DIG A HOLE by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen, Age, 4-8 years
Believe me, I know all about the challenge for parents of two sons to keep them entertained! So Sam and Dave Dig a Hole is the perfect book for our house. In fact, we often change the names to our sons’ names for a little added fun. Mac Barnett, the author, writes an atypical story of two boys looking for an afternoon adventure (which is actually typical for two boys!). Sam and Dave decide to dig a hole until they find “something spectacular”. They dig and dig yet still come up empty. A surprising amount of suspense keeps our boys excited as we turn each page, hoping they find something grand. However, in the end, it’s not an object that they find, but a sense of an adventure. And this is what is spectacular! In a society so full of “stuff”, I love that this story is a refreshing reminder about what is truly important in life.
