Before kids, one of my most guilty pleasures was high-end makeup and beauty products. It started when I was a young girl, too young to wear makeup. I vividly remember going to the department store with my mother, watching as the sales associate at the Clinique counter applied new products to her face.
Done deal. I was hooked.
I loved all things MAC, Bobbi Brown, Bliss, Lancome…the list goes on and on. I even dabbled in the makeup artistry field for a little while because I loved it so much. I became the go-to gal when friends needed their makeup done for an event.
And then I became a mother. Oh, I tried to continue using high-end beauty products but I quickly learned that it was not to be. I mean, let’s be honest. How can I spend $30 on DiorShow Mascara when baby needs diapers? And formula? And (gasp) have you seen the cost of day care? It wasn’t easy to face the reality that I needed to change since high-end makeup products were something I loved, but not as much as my baby.
Luckily, I found a handful of fantastic “drugstore” options for my daily makeup routine that I plan to keep on using even if I hit the lottery! *Note that I’m not affiliated with any brand.
Here are some of my faves:
Maybelline Fit Me Shine Free Balance Stick Foundation
(Available at Target for $6.99)
My previous foundations were all liquid so I would apply with a blending sponge or a makeup brush — 2 tools that don’t work for busy moms on the go. This stick is life changing. Not only does it provide even and fantastic lightweight coverage, it is a STICK! You can toss it into your pocketbook if you need a touch up during the day. The Maybelline website says this about the Fit Me Shine Foundation: “This lightweight gel foundation has an exclusive anti-shine powder core that instantly dissolves excess oil. Pores look minimized and skin stays shine-free for ten hours. This oil-absorbing foundation stick goes on creamy and blends into a natural matte finish.” I’d say it works exactly as advertised.
Maybelline Super Stay Better Skin Powder
(Available at Target for $8.99)
This is truly one of my favorite products that I have used for a while. It goes over my foundation for a fantastic, flawless, pressed-powder matte look. Like a lot of women, I don’t use foundation in the summer but I will still use this powder. I think it shrinks the appearance of pores and minimizes shine. The most amazing part of this powder is that it contains salicylic acid which helps treat clogged pores (hence the “better skin” in the name)! The compact makes life easy and can easily be tossed into your pocketbook to reapply during the day. I usually do not even need to reapply since the powder stays put all day long.
Maybelline Face Studio Master Strobing Stick Illuminating Highlighter
(Available at Target for $7.99)
My next favorite product came from a friend. Since then my busy mom morning makeup routine has gone next level. Usually for my highlighting and contouring I would need brushes and blending sponges and multiple products, and I’d really only highlight and contour when we were going out at night. But this strobing stick is another quick-makeup game changer. Contouring is simple once you get the hang of it, and the Face Studio Master Strobing Stick makes a quick highlight + contour that much easier. Even if your busy mom schedule doesn’t have time for a whole contour regimen, a quick swipe and blend of this stick will add a dewy glow to your cheeks.
As moms, we often find we have put ourselves on the back burner, especially when it comes to spending money on things like makeup. It’s hard to give up something you have always liked and are comfortable with, like my romance with high-end makeup. But finding the right substitute is just the trick and I could not be more happy with my drug store makeup finds. With these products, I really found a way to get that high-end makeup sheen without the high-end price tag. No one knows the difference — except my wallet!
